Suzanne Voros and her husband moved here from Wisconsin this past October (so our weather is practically balmy to her). She loves reading and over the years has spent countless hours reading to her children and instilling a love for the written word in each of them. She is a nurse with 34 years of experience and counting, and she spent 12 of those years teaching at a university in their School of Nursing. She will be volunteering for Story Time every second Saturday.

This month, she'll be reading The Kitten Story, written by Emily Jenkins and illustrated by Brittany Cicchese, and I Am Stuck, written and illustrated by Julia Mills.

When a cat-loving family decides to bring home a pet, their quest reveals the highs and lows of everyday family life in this heartwarming story perfect for kitten lovers and everyone who's ever longed for a pet. (Ages 5-8)

Finally, it's time for this family to adopt a pet of their own! But big decisions remain to be made. The two children, Tulip and Rosie, definitely want a kitten. But Daddy insists an older cat is best. No one can agree about what name to give the new family member, either. When Mommy and Rosie visit a shelter to choose their pet, yet another problem arises and they must go home empty-handed. This deftly paced story from best-selling author Emily Jenkins--winsomely narrated by Mommy, who just wants to find peaceful solutions--highlights themes of finding family unity among realistic conflict and overcoming disappointment. Readers will rejoice along with the family as, finally, they welcome home their very own, absolutely wonderful kitten.

Cover of Julia Mills's "I Am Stuck"

A tender (and humorous!) look at the way tough emotions can make us feel stuck and how the presence of a good friend and a deep belly laugh can make it easier to get through stormy feelings. Complete with back matter to help stuck readers feel better through noticing, smelling, talking, and taking a deep breath, this is a perfect pick for those who loved Grumpy Monkey and The Rabbit Listened. (Ages 4-8)

"Stuck?" asks Duck. Yep, Turtle is flipped over on his shell and can't seem to get un-stuck. Duck suggests wiggling his feet, Kangaroo wants him to wag his tail, and Armadillo says rolling into a ball always does the trick. But Turtle is STILL. STUCK.

Is there anyone who can help?

This wise and humorous story reminds us that when we're feeling down, sometimes what we need most is a friend by our side--and a deep belly laugh--to help us get back on our feet again.
